TYPE OF WATER HEATER	PROS	CONS
Traditional	Stores hot water that’s ready to be used in your home at any time. The tank refills as the water is used. Installation is fairly simple and inexpensive.	Uses gas or electricity to keep the water constantly at a particular temperature, which is reflected in your monthly bill. Must be placed inside and require a fairly decent amount of space. Need to be replaced every 10-15 years. Can run out of hot water.
Tankless	Small units that can be placed inside or outside against a wall. Provides 2-3 gallons of hot water per minute, as needed. Energy efficient Lasts 20 or more years.	Initial installation is pricey and requires some retrofitting. Can run out of water during high demand periods.
Hybrid	Energy efficient. Provides cooling around the space it’s in, which is great for summer and warm weather (this can double as a “con”, depending on climate and time of year).	Requires a large upfront investment. Less efficient in cold climates during winter. Refilling can be slow which means longer wait times between hot water usage. Requires fans and compressors that can be considered noisy.
Solar	Low operating cost Can last up to 30 years. Large storage capacity Provides hot water during a power outage	Requires an upfront investment for equipment Tank is large, requiring a fairly decent amount of space Tank produces heat, which will heat the space around it (this can double as a “pro” depending on the climate and time of year). Requires more equipment than other types of water heaters, which means more maintenance.
